Malta 2007
Back in 2007, a small group of us ventured out to Malta as a kind of advanced guard to see what the diving was like on this beautiful island. As owner of a timeshare apartment out there, I arranged for 5 of us to spend a week based in Bugibba and diving with Dive Deep Blue. The week went fantastically well and all agreed that there was little more the dive centre could have done to make the week special. So much so that after leaving a year's gap, we decided to return albeit to different digs as there were 17 of us - even my apartment couldn't cope with that!
The group was made up of divers of all experiences and dives were planned accordingly. Non-divers are always welcome too and despite the main focus being on the diving, there are always other things that demand attention (this particular trip clashed with the Rugby World Cup but not a match, nor beer, was missed!)
This time the trip was organised by Trevor (Troy Milton) Milne who you may remember as a child actor in a variety of adverts during the 1960's, who is currently our Chairman. We again dived with Dive Deep Blue and if anything, things were better than before. The sites we wanted to dive were agreed before we left the UK and finalised on site with the dive centre when we arrived - then as per usual in diving, the weather changes and spoils everything!! But the beauty of diving on islands the size of Malta, is that with little fuss, an alternate site on the other (lee) side of the island can be found without affecting the quality of diving.

Bearing in mind Malta's rich history, there is something there to meet every diver's wish. There are some historic wrecks, some purpose sunk boats acting as 'artificial reefs', glorious scenery, caves, tunnels and probably the most breath-taking sight I've ever seen - the myriad colours that greet you as you the exit the darkness of the tunnel leading out from the Inland Sea - the water goes from black at the sea bed to iridescent white as the Mediterranean sun glints through the surface.

If you add all this to the price and quality of the food and drink, the genuine friendliness of the locals and the fact they even drive on the left, it really is an idyllic trip - and one I'm sure will be repeated. But, Malta isn't the only great place we've been to
